This short course is intended to enhance course participants’ understanding of the principles and methods used in modern sonar systems to detect, classify and localize underwater targets of interest. Interactive engagement via questions and discussion between instructor and participants is encouraged and emphasis is placed on ensuring understanding of key concepts in a manner that enables retention and practical use after the course is complete.
The goal of the course is providing participants with enhanced knowledge of arrays and beamforming, active and passive sonar fundamentals, acoustic signal processing and detection theory, along with its processing algorithms.

This course is tailored to enhance the working knowledge of engineers, systems developers, programmers and others working on sonar system development projects as well as personnel involved in sonar system deployment, operation and testing. It is also suitable as an overview for those engaged in project management, marketing and administration of some-related projects. Familiarity with basic engineering mathematics is assumed but not required. Actual course content and presentation can be adapted based on participants’ background.
